Dealing With Baby Eczema

By David Springall

Eczema is very common in infants and babies. Atopic eczema is most common in babies and appears between the ages of two months and 18 months. It usually starts with a intensely itchy rash on the face, and in the inner creases of the elbows, and behind the knees. The skin often scales in these parts, and small red pimples may appear. When the baby scratches, the pimples begin to ooze and join to form large weeping areas. Infections occur in the nappy area because of the high level of dampness.

- How To Treat Baby Eczema

It has been known that Eczema in babies can sometimes be caused by environmental factors, like low humidity. Use of uncomfortable clothing made from materials like scratchy wool can also irritate your baby. Hygine products which may have perfumes in and even some foods cause this skin condition. So, what can you do to help your baby avoid getting eczema?

- Below are some effective tips

1/ Ensure that the baby's skin is moisturized properly.

Always use lukewarm water when bathing your baby, it is the ideal temperature for avoiding skin dryness. After bathing, apply mild and fragrance-free moisturizers to keep your baby's skin soft and supple.

2/ Try not to "over clean" your baby.

Over washing your baby can be as damaging as not doing enough in the first place. clean your baby's feet, hands, and genitals, with water, then rinse the rest of the body.

3/ Whenever possible make sure your baby's clothes are made out of cotton.

Cotton is great because it is one of the most comfortable kinds of clothing around. It will also help if the clothing is loose instead of tight as this will help reduce irritation.

4/ Always feed your baby fresh nutritious food because one of the main factors of eczema is malnutrition. If your baby is unhealthy the immune will struggle to fight the eczema bacteria. Never give your baby artificial or junk foods.

5/ Try to keep your baby stress-free.

Babies can get very stressed if they are uncomfortable, anxious,or irritated.

6/ Never apply any ointment, or solution to your baby unless it has been prescribed by a medical specialist.

In many cases this condition tends to clear itself as the child gets older, however it may come and go a few times for several years. Quite often many children outgrow atopic eczema by puberty.
